A Reliable Wife Review

Psychological suspense and mystery, beginning with deception and then evolving into a much more complex and involved relationship where intrigue gives way to the drama of two lives becoming a true relationship with many convoluting paths along the way. A Reliable Wife is set in Wisconsin, during the winter of 1907. Catherine Land has lived by her wits after surviving her traumatic early life and is well aware that her sexuality provides her with her most powerful weapon - one that she is not hesitant in using for her own ends. Catherine decides to answer the advertisement she found in a newspaper: a reliable wife was required by an affluent businessman whose home more remote than Catherine is used to. Catherine Land sets out to skilfully use her weapons of feminine wiles to entice the businessman, Ralph Truitt, to marry her and convince him that she was suitable as a reliable wife.

Despite being aware of her deception, Ralph does marry her, after which the two of them search for Ralph’s estranged son. This basic description of A Reliable Wife doesn’t do justice to the underlying chemistry of smouldering desire that led Ralph, after 20 years of unrequited desire, to his decision to marry Catherine. A Reliable Wife practically smoulders with passionate innuendoes and emotions that are threatening to break through the surface. The atmosphere created by A Reliable Wife is spell-bounding.

The suspense increases as a riding accident injures Ralph as he returns from the station, leaving Catherine to nurse him back to health, reflecting on the jewels sewn into the hem of her plain wool dress and the party frocks she had abandoned by heaving them carelessly through the windows of the moving train.

The psychological suspense deepens in A Reliable Wife when Catherine begins to poison Ralph with small doses of arsenic. This doesn’t kill him although Ralph becomes sick: the story in A Reliable Wife evolves from this dubious relationship and flourishes in ways that are as completely unexpected as they are convoluted. Without giving anything away, A Reliable Wife is not what it seems. Catherine and Ralph may each have had different expectations from this marriage of convenience, but neither Catherine nor Ralph are exactly what they first seem: they are destined for each other in more ways than one.
